Winter Seasons Greetings FUREE Supporter,
On behalf of FUREE staff and membership, we’d like to extend a heartfelt thank you for your continued support and donations. In the weeks and months after this year’s general election, we know that there is a more urgent need to not only organize in our communities but to protect hard won successes in the fight for our preservation and security. New York City housing crisis means there is all the more need for a powerful social justice movement that understands the importance of permanent low income housing, a robust social safety net and a political system that is responsive to the priorities of the communities that rely on it.
FUREE has gone through many hard struggles over the last few years but we have emerged stronger for it, and now have the support and infrastructure of Fifth Avenue Committee to sustain and grow our work. We are happy to say that the decisions we’ve made and the new steering committee of member-leaders has helped us return to some of our former campaigns that were staples of our organizing, as well as even take on new programming!
FUREE just finished its voter engagement campaign for the presidential election where we collected thousands of new contacts and over 100 newly registered voters. We have also revived our FUREEous youth program, which has formed its core youth leadership and is planning its first campaign! Our former F.I.R.E Leadership Academy has been rebranded and re-launched as the F.I.R.E.D UP Leadership Academy (FUREE Institute for Resistance, Equality and Determination), and has been updated for our growing list of campaigns and the skills-building needs of our membership & base. Our 2016 academy engaged over 40 members of our core constituency and the majority of them have now moved on to our graduated program where they will be trained in the skills needed to lead the academy themselves! Our accountable development campaign has taken a new form in the recent programs for NextGen introduced by NYCHA which aim to use city-owned land for under-regulated and increasingly unaffordable housing, instead of building truly affordable housing for those most in need and preserving/protecting public housing against privatization.
Given the long road ahead of us which includes the new administration of Donald Trump, the upcoming New York mayoral and City Council elections, we ask that our supporters and allies help expand FUREE’s capacity to continue our current work and be able to take on new campaigns. Our steering committee has already expressed an interest in reviving our voter engagement for next year in addition to hosting a large social justice conference to fortify our bonds and commitments as well as attract new blood into our membership. Our ideas and plans rely on our most vital resource to bring them to fruition, and that resource is you!
If you have the means this holiday season, can you support us with a donation to FUREE? Your contribution no matter how large or small will go a long way to providing the funds we need to maintain staff and all the expenses that go into succeeding in our work! From childcare support and meals at our events, transportation assistance to our workshops for those who need it, to developing materials for our programming, every penny counts and we count on you. FUREE will continue to remain a member-led program committed to building power and solidarity in low-income communities of Brooklyn and across the country. Please help us with a one-time or ongoing donation, all of which are tax-deductible. We hope that you continue to be a part of our family and become more active in our work!
Peace and Love,
FUREE Staff and Steering Committee
