The recently formed FUREEousYouth Arts House [FIYAH] launches its all new monthly Open Mic series for social justice this January, with a MLK Holiday Tribute to commemorate the lesser known but radically powerful aspect of King’s activism!
Young artist from all over NYC will share their music poetry, music, comedy, video/film, and/or dance for justice, and the Dr. Martin Luther King beyond “I Have A Dream” – Non-violent resistance to the Anti-War/Poor People’s Movement Dr. King that spoke truth to power and paid the ultimate sacrifice.
Join the FUREEous Youth as they explore the relevance of the Radical Dr. King in the tumultuous times of 21st Century activism. The evening of performances will be hosted and MC’d by our very own Frantasia Fryer, followed by a short panel discussion moderated by another of FUREEous Youth’s leaders, Messiah Stith.
This Open Mic Series is a monthly showcase of youth talent highlighting the various challenges to young people in public housing and beyond. Topics such as suicide prevention, police harassment & brutality, gun and domestic violence, LGBTQ rights and activism are explored with raw honesty and hope.
Food and drink can be purchased with cash, credit or debit at cafe and bar.
**NOTE: All Performing and supporting youth will be provided with a full dinner and transportation at the end of the night (must coordinate in advance). If any one is interested in performing at future events, please contact Mo Beasley (see information above).
