Over 100 residents attend FUREE-sponsored supermarket forum

On Thursday, April 14th, low-income families and public housing residents packed into the Ingersoll Community Center for a critical meeting on the new Red Apple Supermarket slated to open across the street later this summer.

Watch this video clip of FUREE leader Cynthia Butts speaking at the forum and this video recap of the event produced by filmmaker Kelly Anderson.

FUREE took the lead in organizing the event, along with Council Member Letitia James, District Leader Lincoln Restler and the Myrtle Avenue Revitalization Project (MARP).  FUREE has worked for years to fight for a new affordable supermarket that hires local people and offers high-quality food ever since the old Associated Supermarket was torn down in 2007 to make way for luxury development. As part of FUREE's Campaign for Accountable Development our members worked to expose the hardship that Red Apple Group CEO John Catsimatidis has caused area residents, and to pressure the billionaire developer to give back to the community what he took away years ago.  Click here to view FUREE's "Who is John Catsimatidis?" flier for more information.

FUREE members will work with community allies to ensure that reccomendations generated by area residents at the April 14th meeting are incorporated into the new Red Apple Supermarket and that the new store is genuinely beneficial to low-income families.
