Job Opening

Project Coordinator

FUREE is looking for someone with both community organizing and theatrical or film production experience who wants to coordinate our partnership with the award-winning Foundry Theatre to develop and produce a full-scale musical theater production this year. We are looking for a dedicated, passionate, experienced person who is looking to connect art and activism, and who is looking for the opportunity to work in a growing organization of local and national prominence doing cutting-edge racial, gender and economic justice organizing. This is a part-time temporary position to support this unique collaboration between the social justice and performing arts sectors.

FUREE is a multi-racial, women-led membership organization in Brooklyn, New York. FUREE is organizing to build a strong base of low-income women of color to build power to change the system so that all peoples’ work is valued and everyone has the right and economic means to decide and live out their own destinies. Our guiding principle is that the people who are directly impacted by the policies we are seeking to change should lead the organization.

We are partnering with The Foundry Theatre to stage a full-scale musical theater production performed by members of FUREE. The Foundry is an award winning company that commissions, develops, premieres and tours new theatrical works that merge the exploration of social and political questions with unique theatrical forms. Simultaneously, The Foundry hosts public dialogues that bring artists together with other public thinkers to investigate the workings of a changing city.

This pertains to all auditions, rehearsals and related gatherings. The Coordinator will also manage the calendar, contact list and correspondence before the stage manager joins the production and then in coordination with her/him. This position will also serve as the ongoing point of contact between both organizations.
  2. Location and Materials Planning and Preparation: Finding and confirming sites of auditions and rehearsals, checking on and guaranteeing materials required for auditions, rehearsals and performances and producing outreach materials in conjunction with the Foundry and FUREE.
Qualifications:
  • At least one year of community or labor organizing experience, preferably with low-income communities, with a demonstrated capacity to effectively carry out the above responsibilities

  • A strong commitment to racial and economic justice and to FUREE's mission
  • Enthusiasm for and an appreciation of theatre and the arts.
  • Ability to effectively communicate, motivate and listen
  • Problem solver. If someone cannot make a rehearsal, for example, figuring out what we can do to make something else work
  • Flexible schedule. This work may require between 4 – 20 hours weekly, including some nights and weekends, depending on the stage of the project.
  • Reachable by phone, text and/or e-mail and able to respond within a reasonable time frame
  • Speaking Spanish a plus

Priority consideration will be given to active members of FUREE’s campaigns or projects. Women of color, immigrants, child care providers, differently-abled, and residents of Brooklyn -especially Fort Greene, Downtown Brooklyn and Bedford-Stuyvesant -are strongly encouraged to apply. FUREE is a positive and inclusive women-led, supportive work environment.
